How can I beat my friend's Mega Gengar?

3 minute read

Gengar-Mega @ GengariteAbility: Shadow TagEVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 SpeTimid NatureIVs: 0 Atk- Sludge Wave- Shadow Ball- Dazzling Gleam- Hypnosis

This is his set, its really good and annoying, his mega gengar outspeeds mine and ohkoes it, I have a greninja and garchomp and excadrill, but his hypnosis, some way, hits every time and then does quick work of them, any non legendary/mythical Gen 6 or below Pokemon would be appreciated

An option that easily beats Gengar is Tyranitar. Tyranitar can also set sand for Excadrill, letting it sweep much more easily. Tyranitar tanksthreeDazzling Gleams from Gengar while trapping it with Pursuit or OHKOing it with Crunch.

Tyranitar @ Leftovers / Lum Berry / Chesto BerryAbility: Sand StreamEVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpDCareful Nature- Crunch / Pursuit- Stealth Rock- Earthquake- Thunder Wave / Toxic

Pursuit will let you always eliminate Gengar when Tyranitar comes in because it can still hit if it tries to switch out. You can use Crunch if you aren’t worried about it switching out. Earthquake is useful as further coverage, and Stealth Rock can be used to break sashes and provide more chip damage. Thunder Wave is useful for slowing down your friend’s team, while Toxic can cripple their defensive Pokemon.

Leftovers is a good option to provide Tyranitar with passive recovery, but if you’re worried about Hypnosis use Lum Berry. Chesto Berry is an option if your friend is using other status moves, as Chesto Berry doesn’t effect non sleep status so it guarantees a cure of Hypnosis.

Calcs:

Use Sand Rush ExcadrillUnder a Sandstorm, Excadrill can outspeed and OHKO that Gengar with a STAB EQ. Use this set:

Excadrill @ Lum BerryAbility: Sand RushAdamant Nature252 Atk/4 SpD/252 Spe-Earthquake- Iron Head- Sandstorm(Filler)

So, you set up Sandstorm on the first turn, doubling its speed because of Sand Rush. If Hypnosis hits, Lum Berry cures it. Then, you outspeed the Gengar and OHKO it with a Earthquake.

Calcs:252+ Atk Excadrill Earthquake vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Gengar-Mega: 444-524 (169.4 - 200%) – guaranteed OHKO252 SpA Gengar-Mega Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Excadrill: 228-268 (63.1 - 74.2%) – guaranteed 2HKO

Hello liz and I think you should go for charizard that goes mega.Charizardheld item = mega x/ymove set :flamethrowerearthquakerockslidefly/thunder punch

I always give my charizard this moveset because it is just a sweaper with this move set.plus if you want to use dragon dance easy sweap so this is easy win against gengar.

Mega Gengar is difficult to check in the traditional sense, as it can usually choose its matchups favorably with Shadow Tag.

Pursuit: Pursuit users can trap Gengar on the turn it Mega Evolves, thereby preventing it from removing a Pokemon of its choice. However, Mega Gengar can still eliminate the Pursuit user with Destiny Bond, andTyranitaris generally OHKOed by Focus Blast, whileMega Scizoris OHKOed by Hidden Power Fire.

Ghost-types: Ghost-type Pokemon are unaffected by Shadow Tag, allowing them to switch out freely against Mega Gengar. Giratina-O andAegislashcan also threaten Mega Gengar with STAB Shadow Sneak and have enough special bulk to survive a Shadow Ball from Mega Gengar, OHKOing it in return.

Priority: Super effective priority moves, such as Sucker Punch and Shadow Sneak, usually OHKO Mega Gengar before it can react. However, Sucker Punch fails if Mega Gengar does not attack and can still be exploited with Destiny Bond. Given its poor bulk, Bullet Punch can pick off a weakened Mega Gengar too.

Choice Scarf: Choice Scarf users can typically outspeed and OHKO Mega Gengar, allowing them to revenge kill it or force it out on a double switch.

Faster Pokemon: Mega Mewtwo Y and Deoxys-A, Ubers’s resident fast Psychic-type powerhouses, can outspeed and dispatch Mega Gengar, as can Deoxys-S if it carries Psycho Boost. Healthy Dragon Dance users such as Rayquaza and Mega Salamence can force Mega Gengar to risk a prediction between Taunt and Destiny Bond, as can Speed BoostBlaziken. Mewtwo forces a Speed tie with Mega Gengar, which it generally does not want to risk.

Shed Shell: Shed Shell allows a Pokemon to escape Shadow Tag freely but has no other utility.
