How do the Pledge moves work?

2 minute read

I know that certain combinations with the Pledge moves create extra side effects. But what type damage does it do? For example, if Water Pledge and Grass Pledge are used, the animation is Grass Pledge. But does it do Grass damage, Water damage, or both?

When two allies attempt to use Grass Pledge and either Fire Pledge or Water Pledge on the same turn, the ally moving first will not itself use a move, but instead the ally moving second will use a combined attack with a power of 150 and an additional effect immediately after it:

If Grass Pledge and Fire Pledge are used in the same turn, the ally moving second will use Fire Pledge with a power of 150, and create a sea of fire on the target’s side of the field for four turns. The sea of fire damages all non-Fire-type Pokémon on that side of the field for 1/8 of their maximum HP at the end of each turn.

If Grass Pledge and Water Pledge are used in the same turn, the ally moving second will use Grass Pledge with a power of 150, and create a swamp on the target’s side of the field for four turns. This swamp quarters the Speed of all Pokémon on that side of the field.

Grass Pledge,Fire Pledge,Water Pledge

It will do the damage of whatever Pledge was used last. If Grass Pledge is used after Water Pledge, it will quarter the Speed of all Pokemon on the other side of the field. If Water Pledge is used after Fire Pledge, the chance for secondary effects is doubled. If Fire Pledge is used after Grass Pledge, all non-fire Pokemon affected will have 1/8 of their max HP taken away at the end of every turn.

Ok, so here are how the Pledge moves work:

If there is only one Pokemon using a pledge move, it’s 80 base power. However, combinations are interesting. First, Fire and grass. The first moving Pokemon will not move, however, the second Pokemon will launch a fire pledge at 150 power, regardless if it used fire pledge or grass pledge. This also creates an effect where non-fire types lose 1/8 of their HP each turn. If grass and water are used in conjunction, this means that grass pledge will be the dominant one, and be the damaging move. It creates a swamp that quarters the speed of Pokemon. If water and fire are used, water takes dominance and is the damaging move. It creates a rainbow that doubles secondary effects (aside from flinching)

This,This, andThis

While the prevailing type for the damage has already been established, one other thing to note is that pledge combo moves have an override thatalways gives then STAB, no matter who’s using the move. Even if you have Silvally holding a Fire Memory with Grass Pledge and Smeargle using Water Pledge, so that neither of them share a type with either side of the move, they still get the bonus.
