Is there any point in-game to buying Hyper Potion in Sun/Moon?

1 minute read

I’ve done the maths on the ‘Potion’ range of items, and with all the cost and number of HP changes, Potions are now the best value for money. Although this is just a game, even games need to follow certain real life rules, and one of those is making buying in bulk (or in this case, more HP per item) better value. Did Game Freak make a major mistake, or was this, for some insane reason, intentional? And regardless, is there any value in buying a Hyper potion?

Potions only restore 20 HP, while Hyper Potions restore 120 HP. Potions may seem like the better alternative outside of battle, but, in battle, I don’t think that using six Potions over six turns to get the same effect as using one Hyper Potion over one turn is the smartest thing to do.(Quoted directly from my comment.)

I believe they changed this so that Max Potions and Full Restores would have more significance throughout the player’s general playthrough of Sun and Moon. Previously, Hyper Potions and their crazy 200 HP meant that you would use them well after the Elite 4, which I do not believe Game Freak intended to happen (Why else would Max Potions and Full Restores be sold at the Elite 4?). With this change, causing the Potions to now only heal 120 HP, Hyper Potions are now seen as only being useful for the last stretch of Trials before the Elite 4, and Game Freak’s dream of you buying Max Potions/Full Restores in bulk before the Elite 4 as thetruelate-game potions, is realized. Hopefully, that spiel should answer your question.
