IV's and Shinies clarification

1 minute read

Okay, every since I’ve gotten into the more detailed world of pokemon, ive always heard that IV’s determain a pokemon’s being or not being shiny. So does that mean that there is a certain IV spread or spreads that make a pokemon shiny? ( Note, PO isn’t accurate here, they give shininess just so players can enjoy the look of their shiny pokemon. )

In Generation II, Shininess isdetermined by the IVs of a Pokémon. Ifa Pokémon’s Speed, Defense, andSpecial IVs are 10, and its Attack IVis 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 or 15, itwill be Shiny. This determinationallowed for compatibility withGeneration I, as if a Shiny Pokémon istraded back, then traded forward, itwould retain its Shininess. Despitethe bonus of backward compatibilityallowing for a Shiny Pokémon to learnGeneration I TMs, provided it was aGeneration I Pokémon, Shiny Pokémonare only slightly above average interms of IVs. Due to the probabilityof the IVs lining up in any of thesemanners to produce a Shiny Pokémon, the chance of obtaining one inGeneration II is approximately 1/8192.However, if one breeds a Shiny Pokémonproperly, the offspring may have ashigh as a 1/64 chance of being Shiny, depending on the species of Pokémon.

This only applies to Generation II. In Generations II, IV, and V, the game determines shininess of a Pokémon using a calculation based on the Trainer ID number and secret ID number of the player ecountering it and the personality value of the Pokémon.Click here to learn about personality values.
