What are some good Volt-Turn Pokemon?
For those who don’t know Volt-Turn is a strategies used on many teams in the OU tier. It can be used to break both physical and special walls but most importantly giving you momentum, allowing you to switch into a Pokemon advantageous to you and disadvantageous to your opponent.
Arguably the best Volt-Turn pair is Scizor and Rotom-W. They happen to cover each others weaknesses plus get stab on their respected moves.

Landorus-T @ LeftoversTrait: IntimidateEVs: 244 HP / 64 Atk / 200 DefAdamant Nature- Earthquake- Stealth Rock- U-turn- Hidden Power [Ice]/Stone Edge
Jirachi @ LeftoversTrait: Serene GraceEVs: 252 HP / 236 SDef / 20 SpdCareful Nature- Thunder Wave- Iron Head- U-turn- Wish
Off the bat you may notice that Jirachi and Landorus-T do not synergize perfectly. Deal with it. They have decent synergy, Jirachi taking Ice Beams and stuff like a boss, while Landorus can switch in on ground moves all day. Strong Water and Fire type moves do kill this core off somewhat and Mamoswine trolls it insanely hard, but that’s what team mates are for and besides that the core works pretty well. Jirachi is quite the multi-tasker, spreading paralyzation, passing Wish support to weakened allies, and trolling so hard by paraflinching, while Landorus makes use of Intimidate to significantly boost his physical bulk, giving him the role of taking most physical moves for the core. Landorus also sets rocks and can still hit very hard despite his low attack investment.
Uber Volt Turn
Zekrom @ Choice ScarfAbility: TeravoltEVs: 252 Atk, 252 Speed, 4 HPNature: Adamant- Fusion Bolt- Dragon Claw- Outrage- Volt Switch
Genesect @ Choice Scarf/ Expert BeltAbility: DownloadEVs: 252 Sp. Atk, 252 Speed, 4 HPNature: Modest/ Timid- Bug Buzz- Ice Beam- Flame Thrower- U-Turn
So this duo sees Zekrom taking Water, Fire and Electric hits, while Genesect takes the Dragon and Ice hits while being fully able to deal super-effective damage back to the those types.
There’s that awkward Ground synergy, as Genesect has a x1 neutrality and not very good defences, but that’s what flying types/ Levitiate Pokemon are for.
UU Volt Turn
Victini @ Choice Scarf/ BandAbility: Victory StarEVs: 252 Atk, 252 Speed, 4 HPNature: Adamant/ Jolly- V-Create- Zen Headbutt- Bolt Strike- U-Turn
Rotom-C @ LeftoversAbility: LevitateNature: CalmEVs: 252 HP, 252 Sp. Def, 4 Speed- Will-O-Wisp- Volt Switch- Leaf Storm- Pain Split
This pair sees Victini take Fire and Ice hits while Rotom-C takes the Water and Ground hits. There’s plenty of gaps here - Bug is still x1 for Victini, and Poison is x2 for Rotom-C while Rock is x1 but Leaf Storm will be super effective. There’s no Dark or Ghost coverage, but still, I’ll assume that these aren’t the only Pokemon on your team.
NU Volt Turn
Emolga @ Flying GemAbility: Motor DriveNature: Adamant/ JollyEVs: 252 Atk, 252 Speed, 4 HP- Acrobatics- Encore- Roost- U-Turn/ Volt Switch
Lumineon @ Damp RockAbility: Swift SwimNature: ModestEVs: 252 HP, 252 Sp. Atk, 4 Speed- Rain Dance- Surf- Ice Beam- U-Turn
I know that this is far from the perfect pair, but still, Emolga manages to take the Electric hits with Motor Drive, and Lumineon will take the Ice hits.
The Lumineon set doesn’t have to be a Rain Dance one, but then again, what else are you going to use it for.
I put an Acrobatics set for Emolga, but a Thunder set is possible as well due to Rain Dance. U-Turn is actually preferable for Acro-Emolga because it’s a physical set, and Volt Switch is useless against Ground types like Golurk (which is an ever threat in NU).
So something I saw recently that intrigued me and infuriated me was Manectric. In UU.
I decided to share him when I saw it used on main as well (And Slip).
Manectric @ Choice ScarfTrait: LightningrodEVs: 252 SAtk / 252 Spd / 4 DefModest Nature- Flamethrower/Overheat- HP Ice/Signal Beam- Volt Switch- Switcheroo
So this is the set I like for coverage. I chose HP Ice > Signal Beam to deal with Ground types switching in to a “predicted” Volt Switch. However Signal Beam does have more coverage in UU.
His dearly beloved partner is the Monkeyroo
Ambipom @ Normal GemTrait: TechnicianEVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 4 SDefJolly Nature- U-Turn- Low Sweep- Acrobatics- Fake Out
Fake Out lead, with Acrobatics and Low Sweep giving coverage. U-Turn to Manectric. Or simply to get out.
These two pokes have wicked speed and wicked attack stats. Together and used properly they can wreck havoc. As Ambipom’s only weakness is fighting and that isnormallythough not always physical, a switch to Manectric can activate Static.
my personal favorites are
Flygon @ Choice Band/ScarfTrait: LevitateJolly/Adamant NatureEVs: 252 Atk/ 252 Spe/ 4 SDef- Outrage/Dragon Claw- Fire Punch- U-Turn- Earthquakelate game sweeper, and u-turning in and out to rack up damage is a constant threat.
Azelf @ Choice BandTrait LevitateJolly NatureEVs: 252 Atk/ 252 Spe/ 4 SDef- Zen Headbutt- U-Turn- Ice Punch- Explosionwith an often overlooked base 125 Atk and 110 Spe it makes a great choice sweeper and its u-turn dents a lot.
I won’t list victini
or mienshao
or ambipom
Rotom @ Choice ScarfTrait: LevitateModest NatureEVs: 252 Spe/ 252 SAtk/ 4 Def- Shadow Ball- Volt Switch- Trick- Hidden Power Ice/Grasswhile less SAtk than its appliance formes, it has higher Spe which makes it a great Choice Scarfer. its typing is also amazing and ghost Rotom is sadly underrated.
I also find this a good Volt Turn supporter :
Hitmontop @ Expert BeltTrait: TechnicianAdamant NatureEVs: 252 Atk/ 252 HP/ 4 Def- Mach Punch- Rapid Spin- Fake Out- Sucker Punchforces quite a few switches so its easy to spin. also Fake Out Mach Punch and Sucker Punch offer priority to help clear out a path for your sweepers
Here are two UU Pokemon that rarely even see each other… at all.
Cobalion @ Rocky HelmetJustifiedTimid128 Def, 128 SpA, 252 SpeVolt-SwitchFocus Blast/Flash CannonStealth RockThunder Wave/Calm MindAn interesting set that both utilizes his uncommon Volt-Switch, and has the capacity to set up on a weak or non-threatening Pokemon. Now as to Focus Blast and Flash Cannon, if you want power, go Focus Blast, but Flash Cannon also gives great coverage and still obtains STAB. Now the choice between TW and CM is simply, do you want to try to kill the opposition, or do you want to cripple them for later.
Azelf @ Expert BeltLevitateJolly4 HP, 252 Atk, 252 SpeU-TurnZen HeadbuttIce PunchThunder PunchA no-brainer U-Turn set. Zen Headbutt adds some STAB. Ice Punch for the likes of ground types. And Thunder Punch for added coverage.
I know this set is not the best, but as it has been agreed, Scizor+Rotom-W is the best. They both cover each other pretty well. Cobalion takes Dark types pointed at Azelf like a baws. He also can handle a strong ghost or bug type attack without being KOed. Now as for Azelf, he has leviate which puts Cobalions ground weakness out of concern. The blue balloon can easily soak a psychic type attack but it has trouble taking fire type attakcs due to having no resistance. But overall, they are a great team
