What are some unique Pokemon or strategies to deal with grass types?

3 minute read

Obviously I’ve been looking online but I wanted to hear opinions. I don’t care if it’s the best Pokemon I just specifically want ideas for ways to deal with grass types in a unique way(i don’t want a fire sweeper)

For example, something bulky that can simply resist grass well. Perhaps something with an unexpected moveset?

Pros:

Cons:

Mostly not. There are really a few usable Grass Pokémons:

I will help you on dealing with these specifically.

It can get dangerous, as Thick Fat, when Mega-Evolved, it loses its Fire and Ice weakness. The best counter is Mega-Alakazam, who OHKOes it with Psyshock easily. Trace will copy Thick Fat, leaving Alakazam resistant to fire and ice for free.

Alakazam @ Alakazite:Trait: TraceEVs: 252 Sp.Atk / 252 Speed / 4 HPTimid Nature

A physical wall with Regenerator. Hard to battle, if switching is enough to get back health. But I think it has a wide open weakness to special attack. I would say Gengar is the best counter with Sludge Bomb. And moreover, you block Tangrowth with Shadow Tag, making it unable to use Regenerator.

Gengar @ Gengarite:Trait: Shadow TagEVs: 252 Sp.Atk / 252 Speed / 4 HPTimid Nature

Roserade sets up Spikes and Sleep Powder because now, it is legal. So it is a bit harder to battle than before. Still, fire, psychic and flying Pokemon remain the best solutions. Search for one. I think Prankster Taunt may shut it down, so Tornadus is a counter, as it can also hit with Hurricane. No sets here.

Do not think a little bit, just 2 seconds and you understand that any Fire Pokémon can deal with it. Houndoom is an example.

Houndoom @ Houndoomite:Trait: Solar Power (Usable with Ninetales to win the weather war.)EVs: 252 Sp.Atk / 252 Speed / 4 HPTimid Nature

Whimsicott can not be demolished by dragons, courtesy to its new typing: fairy. The above Gengar is the perfect counter to Whimsicott.

Everybody agree with me that Ferro is weak to Fire, no ? Then, what do you wait ? Houndoom, above, is enough.

This one is demolished by fondant’s Skarmory set. And Honchkrow.

Hope I helped !In general, Poison, Ice, Flying, Bug and Fire are enough against Grass.

I suppose the best alternatives are poison or flying types.

Skarmory @ LeftoversAbility: SturdyEVs: 252 HP, 252 Def, 4 Sp. DefNature: Impish-Spikes-Roost-Whirlwind-Brave Bird

Amoongus @ Black SludgeAbility: RegeneratorEVs: 252 HP, 88 Def, 168 Sp. DefNature: Calm-Spore-Clear Smog-Giga Drain-HP Fire

So these two are walls, both serving support roles rather than being offensive, but Amoongus can be offensive if you want it to be. They both have a double resistance to grass, and Amoongus has the bonus of being immune to spore/ powder moves in Gen VI because of its grass typing.

Crobat @ Black SludgeAbility: Inner FocusEVs: 176 HP, 192 Atk, 140 SpeedNature: Jolly-Brave Bird-Taunt-Roost-U-Turn/ Super Fang

Crobat is usually used as a stall breaker; it’s got a double grass resistance as well, and access to Super Fang which can be useful if something’s been spamming stat boosts.

Honchkrow @ Life OrbAbility: MoxieEVs: 252 Atk, 252 Speed, 4 HPNature: Jolly-Brave Bird-Sucker Punch-Substitute/ Heat Wave-Roost

So Honchkrow is probably the most offensive based Flying type outside of Ubers; it has really nice attack, a useable sp. atk, but mediocre speed. Heat Wave is good against Ferrothorn, considering Brave Bird + Life Orb + Iron Barbs recoil will hurt.

A good check for a grass team could be galvantula who is electric/bug.He resists Grass and has STAB bug moves.Galvantula@life orbNature: ModestTrait:SwarmEvs: 252 sp attack/200 speed/56hp-Bug buzz-Hp fire-Volt switch-sticky web

Pretty standard Galvantula set, works well. Sounds like it should counter grass, put it into practice and have a go.Hope I helped :)

You could defend with a bulky fire type or a water type with a move that’s supereffective against grass types. You could use a Pokemon like Ninetales or Delphox with their high SPEC. Def. And high SPEC. Atk. Fire, steel, dragon, and poison types beat grass types so use those types of Pokemon.
