Role: Bulky Pivot
Growlithe @ Heavy-Duty BootsAbility: IntimidateLevel: 5EVs: 236 Def / 196 SpD / 76 SpeCalm Nature- Snarl- Morning Sun- Flamethrower- Will-O-Wisp/Toxic
Growlithe’s decent SpD and Def makes it a mon that can tank hits and switch into checks in time. Its ability Intimidate makes stalling easier as it weakens physical mons, allowing Growlithe to survive a hit and bring the sweeper in safely. Since Intimidate lowers the Atk stat, if the opponent is a Special attacker like Abra and Magnemite, Snarl would be a good option as it lowers their SpA, weakening them. Will-o-wisp is to cripple the opponent, halving the power of its moves and taking damage. Toxic is another alternative as it damages the opponent and in order to stall out opponents. Flamethrower is STAB and because of Growlithe’s high SpA stat and to KO Pokemon like Ferroseed and Pawniard.
Heavy-Duty Boots to prevent Growlithe taking Stealth Rock damage, as it deals A LOT of damage to Growlithe, in addition to other hazards such as Spikes or Toxic Spikes. Morning Sun for quick recovery, making Growlithe a good pivot and check to many Pokemon such as Honedge and Bronzor. Some threats to Growlithe are Baltoy and Popplio, although Baltoy can be taken care of with a super-effective Snarl that will also lower its SpA. Growlithe can still survive to Will-o-wisp or Snarl Popplio and cripple it. Pokemon like Rowlet and Bulbasaur appreciates Growlithe’s help as it resists Fire type and Ice type moves.
A good teammate for Growlithe would be Azurill or Arrokuda, as Azurill traps the intended opponent’s Pokemon with the STAB move Whirlpool and start stalling with Toxic. Arrokuda is another option as it has access to a variety of coverage moves and can set up one turn with Agility because the opponent will either switch the Pokemon or keep it in the battle for specific reasons such as hazard setting, hazard removing or even using Toxic against Arrokuda. Both options are good, as Arrokuda and Azumarill can switch into Growlithe in order to avoid Grass type attacks, or especially physical ones like Grookey and special ones such as Oddish.Hope this helps :).
Growlithe @ Life OrbAbility: IntimidateLevel: 5EVs: 196 Atk / 76 Def / 196 SpeAdamant Nature- Wild Charge- Play Rough- Flare Blitz- Close CombatAll-out attacker. It can be used as a suicide lead, as recoil + Life Orb won’t let it last long. It’s not intended to stick around the whole match, just do as much damage as possible. Flare Blitz is STAB. Close Combat covers Growlithe’s Rock type weakness and is a very powerful move in general. Wild Charge covers its Water weakness, and Play Rough is solid coverage.
Growlithe @ EvioliteAbility: IntimidateLevel: 5EVs: 116 Atk / 196 SpDCareful Nature- Flare Blitz- Close Combat- Will-O-Wisp- Morning Sun
Flare Blitz is STAB. Close Combat is for coverage. Will-o-Wisp is to cripple physical attackers. Morning Sun is for healing.
These were on another thread that had to be moved.
Growlithe (M) @ Choice BandTrait: Flash FireEVs: 196 Spe / 196 Atk / 76 HP / 36 SpDJolly Nature- Flare Blitz- Close Combat- Wild Charge- Crunch
Flare Blitz is a strong STAB. Close Combat covers Rock Types and hits Dark Types hard. Wild Charge covers Water Types and gives good coverage. Crunch is pretty much a filler because it can’t learn Extreme Speed and Crunch hits Psychic Types and Ghost Types.
Here’s a physically defensive set.
Growlithe (M) @ EvioliteTrait: IntimidateEVs: 236 HP / 236 Def / 36 SpDImpish Nature- Fire Fang- Morning Sun- Roar / Protect- Will-O-Wisp
Fire Fang is the main STAB for damage and doesn’t have recoil. Morning Sun is healing. Roar is to rack up hazard damage and Protect is to stall out the opponent more. Will-O-Wisp is to burn physical attackers and make them useless. It also gives amazing physical bulk when paired with Intimidate.
Growlithe,in my opinion,is a fire Pokemon with fringe mediocre stats, and a horrible movepool.GrowlitheAgilityFlamethrower/Fire BlastBody Slam/Double EdgeDig/MimicThe thing has a pretty bad moveset, but it has agility, which raises crit chances because higher speed=higher chance to get a crit(in gen 1).Flamethrower is strong stab.Fire Blast is more risky stab, but more powerful.Body Slam can hurt quite a bit if it crits, has a chance to paralyze, and does good damage in general.Double Edge is more powerful, but loses paralysis chance and does recoil.Dig can be debunked if the opponent switches to somehthing that can tank it,or is immune to it,but it can hurt if the opponent doesn’t switch.Mimic can be nice if you predict a switch, but it is situational. You also don’t have a lot else. Maybe you can use toxic or substitute. There isn’t anything else that will be consistent.Overall,it has ok stats, but functions like a worse ponyta, and has such a bad movepool that we have to resort to dig and mimic.Ponyta has a bad movepool, but its shallow movepool gives it enough of a niche because of its normal set being pretty powerful.Overall,it is a worse ponyta, and maybe even worse than vulpix, and maybe(big maybe)even worse than charmander,if charmander sets up.
