What is a "Mystery Gift" (specifically in Shield/Legends Arceus)?

I’m incredibly new to playing Pokémon games (just started a month ago) and I’ve seen the mystery gift option in the menu in Shield, but I have 0 clues as to how it actually works.

In short, I would like to know how to actually use it and if there is a list of past/present/upcoming mystery gift Pokémon, and I guess to make life easier just for Shield / Legends Arceus.

The Mystery Gift option is basically were Gamefreak and Nintendo allow for event items and Pokémon.
