Which normal-type Pokemon are the worth using in Pokemon Sword?

6 minute read

hello! I am currently doing a Normal-Type only run on Pokemon Sword. I would like to see which normal-types are worth using to beat this. Any Normal/Other Type is allowed and maybe add the locations.

Thank you in advance!

DubwoolWooloo can be caught early in the game (Route 1) and learns some great moves such as Cotton Guard, Swords Dance, Zen Headbutt, Body Press, and Body Slam.

Dubwool @ LeftoversAbility: Fluffy- Swords Dance (TR)- Headbutt (learned at lv. 21)- Body Press (TR)- Zen Headbutt / Wild Charge (TR)

CinccinoCinccino can be caught as a Minccino right after Milo’s gym. You can find a Shiny Stone to evolve it on Route 8. Cinccino has fantastic Attack and Speed, but the rest of it’s stats are subpar. It’s level-up learnset is also pretty bad.

Cinccino @ Silk ScarfAbility: Either- Retaliate (TM found in Hulbury)- Thief (Works well with Technician; TM)- Seed Bomb (TR)- Play Rough (TR)

HelioliskHeliolisk can be found as a Helioptile on Route 6 and a Sun Stone can be found in the Dusty Bowl near Hammerlocke. Heliolisk is a powerful, speedy special attacker and will make great use of it’s STABs throughout the game.

Heliolisk @ MagnetAbility: Dry Skin- Parabolic Charge (Learned at lv. 28)- Dark Pulse (TR)- Hyper Voice (TR)- Dragon Pulse / Surf (TR)

IndeedeeIndeedee is another great special attacker that can be found in Glimwood Tangle. Good news is you can catch it before Bea. It’s male and female variants differ, so I’ll make sets for both.

Indeedee (M) @ Twisted SpoonAbility: Either- Psychic (learned at lv. 35)- Hyper Voice (TR)- Shadow Ball (TR)- Dazzling Gleam / Energy Ball / Mystical Fire (TR/TM, depending on what your team needs)

Indeedee (F) @ Twisted SpoonAbility: Either- Psychic (learned at lv. 35)- Calm Mind (learned at lv. 40)- Shadow Ball (TR)- Hyper Voice / Energy Ball / Dazzling Gleam / Mystical Fire (TR/TM, depending on what your team needs)

ObstagoonGalarian Zigzagoon can be found as a ! Encounter on Route 1. You need to level up Galarian Linoone past level 35 at night to get Obstagoon.

Obstagoon @ Black GlassesAbility: Either- Night Slash (move relearner)- Close Combat (TR)- X-Scissor (TR)- Cross Poison (TM)

I chose these 4 moves because they’re likely the coverage your team will need, but Obstagoon learns tons of other useful moves like Fire/Ice/Thunder Punch (TMs), Shadow Claw (TM), Stomping Tantrum (TM), Gunk Shot (TR) and Seed Bomb (TR).

I am aware there’s already a selected answer, but I’d like to add my own two cents. I agree with everything the selected answer says, but there’s some more Pokemon I think are also very solid.

NoctowlHoothoot can be found on the very first routes, and Noctowl can be found in several places in the Wild Area, so it’s pretty common. Noctowl is surprisingly good, with access to moves like Moonblast, Hypnosis, Shadow Ball, and Psychic.

Noctowl @ Silk Scarf / Sharp BeakAbility: Tinted Lens if you can get it, Insomnia if not- Hyper Voice- Moonblast- Shadow Ball- Air Slash / Hurricane / Hypnosis

DiggersbyBuneary and Diggersby are both incredibly common in the Wild Area, it should be easy to pick one up. Huge Power is an amazing Ability, and Diggersby is still good even if you can’t get it.

Diggersby @ Silk Scarf / Soft Sand / Choice BandAbility: Huge Power if you can get it, Pickup if not- Earthquake- Body Slam- Fire Punch / Ice Punch / Thunder Punch- Brick Break / U-turn / any other physical move

BewearStufful can be picked up in the Wild Area at the entrance of Motostoke, it’s quite common. Bewear has an excellent Attack stat that’ll put a decent dent in any opponent.

Bewear @ Silk Scarf / Black Belt / Assault VestAbility: Fluffy- Brick Break / Close Combat / Drain Punch- Thrash / Strength / Body Slam- Iron Head- Darkest Lariat

SnorlaxSnorlax can be obtained by the bridge in the Wild Area to the right of the Motostoke entrance, but you’ll need a couple Badges before you can get it. It’s slow, but it hits like a truck, making it worth your while. It has a gigantic movepool, so you can use basically anything on it.

Snorlax @ Expert Belt / Leftovers / Life OrbAbility: Thick Fat- Body Slam- Hammer Arm- High Horsepower / Earthquake- Darkest Lariat

These Pokemon are obtainable if you have the DLC. You’d have to go a bit out of your way to get them, or trade, but they’re quite good.

LopunnyLopunny can be a pain to get, as it’s a friendship evolution, but Buneary is incredibly common in the Isle of Armor. It hits decently hard and it’s got an impressive Speed stat.

Lopunny @ anythingAbility: Cute Charm- Close Combat / High Jump Kick- Headbutt / Quick Attack- Play Rough- U-turn / an elemental punch

BouffalantBouffalant, while slow, has excellent totals in HP, Attack, Defense, and Special Defense. It can be found in the Soothing Wetlands, so you’ll need to go through a small bit of the Isle of Armor story.

Bouffalant @ Life Orb / Silk Scarf / anythingAbility: Sap Sipper / Reckless- Head Charge- Throat Chop- Earthquake / Stomping Tantrum / High Horsepower- Close Combat / Zen Headbutt / any other physical move

TaurosTauros is basically a faster, slightly frailer Bouffalant. It packs quite the punch with a base Attack stat of 100. It can be found in the Isle of Armor.

Tauros @ anythingAbility: Intimidate- Body Slam / Thrash- Earthquake- Throat Chop- Zen Headbutt

Porygon-ZPorygon-Z is a very good special attacker, but it does require trading. If that’s not an issue, you should probably use it. Hyde gives you a Porygon in the Maser Dojo.

Porygon-Z @ Wise GlassesAbility: Download / Adaptability- Psychic / Psyshock- Shadow Ball / Tri Attack- Ice Beam- Thunderbolt

Linoone-HLinoone-H is probably a bit weaker than a lot of other entries on this list, but it can still be useful. Belly Drum is fearsome, even if not always needed in-game. You can get one from Max Adventures in the Crown Tundra.

Linoone @ Sitrus Berry / anything elseAbility: Pickup / Gluttony- Belly Drum- Extreme Speed- Throat Chop- Stomping Tantrum

Hope I helped!

Indeedee is a super useful Pokemon for Sword and Shield playthroughs due to its ability, psychic surge.

Its combination of normal type and psychic type gives it immunity to ghost along with weakening the damage from fighting types. It can be found at Glimwood Tangle and the Lake of Outrage, along with being in max raid battles in the following locations:

Bridge Field, East Lake Axewell, Hammerlocke Hills, Motostoke Riverbank, Rolling Fields, Stony Wilderness, Soothing Wetlands, Challenge Beach, Training Lowlands, Stepping-Stone Sea, Giant’s Bed, Snowslide Slope, Path to the Peak, and Ballimere Lake

Indeedee (M) @ Choice SpecsAbility: Psychic SurgeEVs: 252 SpA / 4 Def / 252 SpeModest Nature- Expanding Force/Psychic- Hyper Voice/Tri Attack- Mystical Fire- Trick

Expanding force because of its damage boost from psychic terrain, which can be traded out with psychic just because you can only get expanding force postgame. Hyper voice for STAB, but you can go with tri attack if you want the 20% chance of a status condition and if you want to hit soundproof Pokemon. Mystical fire to destroy annoying steel types and trick is to switch its choice specs to annoy your opponent.
