Will using Calm Mind cause Focus Punch to skip the "focus" phase?

1 minute read

The user quietly focuses its mind and calms its spirit to raise its Sp. Atk and Sp. Def stats.

The user focuses its mind before launching a punch. This move fails if the user is hit before it is used.

Does it make sense to use Calm Mind and if you don’t get attacked, use Focus Punch and it goes straight to the attack instead of a built-up?

Tested it for certain and no, using Calm Mind does NOT have any effect on Focus Punch.

Inthis replay here,Tyranitar 1hitNo CM Medichamduring Focus Punch, like usual. Even afterCM Medichamused Calm Mind, it still had to Focus before using Focus Punch onTyranitar 2. It was a nice thought, but it just doesn’t work like that in the games, sorry.

Also, even if it did work, I wouldn’t really recommend doing this strategy. Calm Mind boosts the user’sSpecial AttackandSpecial Defense, while Focus Punch is aPhysicalmove. Wasting multiple move-slot in order to use 1 Attack while boosting a different Attacking stat isn’t really worth it. It’s better off to use a different Fighting move, so you don’t have to worry about wasting turns to pull off 1 Attack. Besides, if you get hit during Calm Mind, don’t expect your opponent to forfeit, wondering why you’re setting up so much instead of attacking.

Hope this made sense and helped you :)

No it does not. It is a cool idea tho. All you are doing is raising your stats but other than a boost in dmg you still have to avoid getting hit.
